Starting a life in a new place often comes with challenges that extend far beyond the moment of arrival: learning a new language, finding suitable work and housing, navigating unfamiliar institutions and bureaucracies, and building social connections from scratch. For many, these experiences are accompanied by periods of uncertainty, isolation, homesickness, and the need to adapt to unfamiliar social norms and expectations.

At the same time, many women carry responsibilities not only for themselves, but also for children, relatives, and wider family networks. These responsibilities can add considerable pressure to an already demanding settlement process. At the same time, many also find themselves navigating new forms of dependency on employers, landlords, partners, or state institutions, particularly during the first years after arrival.

Yet nearly all of the women whose stories are shared on this platform also reflect on the ways they navigated these challenges. Despite limited resources and little external support, they found practical solutions, developed new skills, built networks, and created opportunities for themselves and others. Their accounts speak of determination and resourcefulness, yet also of the emotional costs that often accompany the process of building a new life.
