The website aims to share scholarly insights on migration history in the Netherlands, provide access to sources from museums and archives, and present personal stories about migration, making them accessible to a broader audience. The website contributes to women’s history by making visible the experiences, contributions, and life stories of migrant women within the broader history of migration in the Netherlands. The connection to women’s history is particularly visible in the personal stories featured on the website.

Methodology

The website applies a multi-perspective and interactive digital history methodology. It combines academic migration history with personal stories, photographs, films, archival documents, objects and research articles. The website organizes migration history chronologically (from 1580 to the present), geographically (by country or region of origin) and thematically (for example labour, forced or postcolonial migration). Users can explore migration flows through maps and timelines. In the future, we hope to expand the website to also cover the migration history of Flanders (Belgium), turning it into a platform that represents the migration history of the Low Countries as a whole.
